From Prep to Paint: A Cincinnati Exterior Renovation Project

A great exterior paint job starts long before the first coat of paint goes on. Our most recent exterior renovation project is a good example of why exterior painting is more involved than you might think. That's especially true once you take a close look at what your home actually needs.

During this recent exterior renovation in Cincinnati, our crew handled painting, surface preparation, and carpentry repairs across all four sides of the home. The goal wasn't simply to update the color. We wanted to address damaged areas and create a cohesive exterior from the siding and trim down to the gutters, columns, and garage doors. We (and the homeowner!) are very pleased with the results.

Proper Preparation for a Longer-Lasting Finish

Cincinnati weather can be hard on a home's exterior. Over time, moisture, sun exposure, and changing temperatures cause paint to peel, trim to deteriorate, and other issues that need attention before repainting.

Preparation was a major part of this Cincinnati project so our homeowners could enjoy their renovation for much longer.

We started by power washing the painted surfaces to remove dirt and buildup. Areas where the existing coating had begun to fail received additional localized preparation, including scraping, sanding, and priming where necessary.

Of course, preparation isn't the most dramatic part of an exterior renovation, but it's one of the most important. Paint performs best when the surface underneath it is clean, sound, and properly prepared. That's why thorough preparation is also a key part of the exterior painting process we use at 365 Renovations.

Taking Care of Carpentry Repairs Along the Way

One advantage of working with a painting company that also offers light exterior carpentry is that homeowners don't have to coordinate with multiple contractors for a single project. And rather than simply painting over deteriorated materials, repairing necessary areas first will make the finished paint job much better and help it last longer.

This home needed several repairs before painting could move forward, including:

  • Replacement trim around a bay window
  • New siding in the porch area
  • Replacement of damaged siding above the bay window
  • Replacement of a vented soffit

A Warm, Coordinated Exterior Color Palette

Once preparation and repairs were underway, the new color scheme helped bring the different architectural details together.

Sherwin-Williams Functional Gray was used on trim, soffits, and other exterior elements. Alpaca (SW 7022) was used on bay windows, porch ceilings, and garage doors.

Using complementary neutrals in different areas of an exterior can create definition without making the house feel overly busy. On a home with features like bay windows, porches, columns, and detailed trimwork, those subtle color changes can help the architecture stand out.

The painting scope extended well beyond the siding. Our crew painted the home's clapboard siding, soffits, fascia, frieze boards, gutters, downspouts, lintels, columns, and posts to create a consistent, finished look.

Exterior Painting That's About More Than Curb Appeal

A fresh exterior can make a dramatic difference in how a house looks from the street, but good exterior painting also helps protect the materials underneath.

That's why we look at the entire exterior rather than focusing only on the most visible surfaces. From repairing damaged siding to preparing peeling areas and carefully painting the trim details, each step contributes to the finished result.

At 365 Renovations, our services are backed by decades of coating-industry experience, detailed preparation, and a two-year workmanship warranty. If your home's exterior is beginning to show its age, you may need more than a new coat of paint. We're here to help protect your home for years to come.
